Frankenstein
08-02-2017
Hello again! Say: did I ever tell you that in a way, what I do with my art is pretty much the same as what Mary Shelley's Doctor Frankenstein was doing? It really is, with the one exception that I don't only create life, I also take it first.
You see, I make most of my drawings in three phases. The first has the most erotic interest, for me as an artist: it's the pencil work. It is working out idea's, changing them disposing of them, turning things upside down. It is the inventione, and it can become pretty intense. If all goes well, I will completely forget about time, frantically turning out one sketch after another, frequently starting over on the same idea, trying to get it right. In the end, I will have a fully developed pencil drawing which, to me at least, is full of life.

After that, the second phase has to follow. In order to be able to scan it in properly, I have to trace the penciled page in ink. For this I use a few Micron pens, of various line thickness. This is totally tedious, and I have to look for something entertaining on You tube to get through it, maybe a few Ted talks or something about newly found exoplanets: I don't know. It has to be something I won't have to look at, talking heads preferably, because at the same time I have to be visually concentrating on the job at hand. And when it's finally completed, I will end up with a page totally drained of all the life you could find in the pencil drawing. These line drawings are the most flat, boring pages you will ever come across, I promise you.

So I scan them in, and continue on the computer with my new mission: bringing the page back to life again! This I do by rendering it in Photoshop, most of the time. (Those of you familiar with my work will know that every now and then, I will not use the computer, but turn the penciled page into a black and white ink drawing. In that case, the lining and the resurrection go hand in hand, so to speak) Now, although this phase also has some erotic interest, it is here that I put on my artist hat on, more than my bondage hood. Like the first phase, this is very exciting work, but in a different way. In stead of a frantic, anything goes attitude, I now have to be very concentrated and meticulous. And if everything works out in the end, I can present you with a page that is blossoming and full of life once more!
