Celebrating Bishop 21

CP one-eye 09-23-2017
This is the cover picture of Bishop's third album, and there is a lot to like here, I think.
First of all, I think it is a bold move to use just a portret, in stead of a full body picture to promote a bondage album. And of course, it's executed wonderfully. The coloring, the delegate gestures of the hands, the way in which the ball and the lips are still distinguishable under the tape, the apprehensive look in that one eye: it's all superb.
But I wanted to focus on yet another aspect of this piece.

I have written before about Bishop's talent for sequential art. There are of course the comics, and then there are those few series of drawings, dealing with same model in ever tighter bondage. But here we find this aspect in a whole different form: sequential art in one image. This is, of course, a contradictio in terminis. But what I mean to say is that, eventhough the developement isn't actually there, you can see it already in your minds eye: it is that strongly implied in the page at hand.

Bishop reaches this effect by not drawing a static, already fully restrained model, in stead going for the action leading up to that situation. But that's not all: you can draw a page full of frantic action, that gives the reader no clue what to expect next. The point is that the action in the drawing is so precise, so determent, that there can only be one outcome. After this eye, the next will clearly follow. But also: if this rope is pulled further, the result will be a hogtie. If this strap is pulled tight, the legs can only double up. And so on. It's like a scene in an image; I love it.
