Realistic fights
10-21-2017
Hello everyone! Ok, here is something I'm not proud of: I don't like good movies.
I have read Proust, Goethe, Dante, Shakespeare, I know my classical music, have studied art history... but when it comes to film, I just like Marvel and DC super hero movies. I like the Expendables (all three of them, though the second one the least),I like the Bourne movies.
And I like John Wick. Now let me expand on that. Why do I like John Wick? Well, I am a fan of Keanu Reeves ( also like the Matrix), and the films are well shot, well paced and they have great fight choreography.
But on top of that: he beats his female opponents just as brutal as the male ones! I love that! Because I want to see women getting beat down bad? No, because in these fights he is not being dismissive: they hold their own against him, and these are real fights. But it is putting an end to DECADES of TV and movie material wherein I have been forced to watch women of twiggy like proportions beat trained marines, cops, bodybuilders and the likes, up to a point where it became just preposterous. That is why I find the scene of Keanu fighting and taking down Heidi Moneymaker is so satisfying.
I have nothing against women fighting men, or beating them. But it has to be done with a certain amount of realism. That's why I like the scenes with Black Widow in the Avengers movies so much: her moves look like they really could work: it is not a girl throwing a left hook against a man twice her size, with him going down like a sack of potatoes. ( In most of the cases, by the way, those moves are also by Moneymaker, as she is Scarlett Johansons stunt double) Those fights look believable, and... she doesn't win all of them, what makes it even more realistic. Hey, it was nice to get that of my chest. Thanks for listening!
