Basements

CP06-15-2016
Hi,
In the latest update in IDTSMD the action takes place in a basement. I must say: this is one of my favorite environments to use in a comic. Let me explain. Whenever you do a comic strip as an artist, you have to make up your mind about the place of action. Is it indoors or outdoors? If indoors, is it in a room, or in an office, or a shed? Whatever you choose, there is always the problem of consistency. When the protagonists are in a particular room, it is important, for the sake of realism, that the pieces of furniture stay in their places relative to one and other.

And to be honest, to keep that in mind all of the time can become something
of a burden.
Now like I said: I like to use basements as an environment for my shady adventures to take place. I have done quite a lot of them. I like to depict the decay, the flaked off walls, the gloom and doom of it.

But most of all, I like to depict them as a huge maze, which runs underneath the house unlimited. Like in the end scene of The silence of the lambs, for instance, where Clarice stumbles from one surrounding into the next one, seemingly without end.
This gives me the freedom to move my figures around without having to worry to much about the backgrounds: I simply can create a new one for each new situation.

And that's why I love basements!
