Celebrating Bishop 13

CP09-21-2016
It may not be immediately obvious why I have chosen these images to draw your attention to this time. After all, the art doesn't seem all that sophisticated, done in a variety of techniques. The bondage is far from innovative, especially when compared to some of Bishop's other work.
What makes these panels special though is twofold. First of all, these are drawings from the last comic pages Bishop ever made, to my knowledge. This comic consists of only four or five pages; it was never finished. And secondly: right at this moment it seems to me that he had made a jump in the way he layed out his pages. These pages are so great in the way they tell the (simple) story: they are an example of great sequential art, as it is called.

The angles he chooses, the switching of location back and forth, the fact that the girl is the only one noticing the direct danger, and the technique of the random shooting: it all contributes to a way of story telling so intense and fast as I haven't seen in one of his comics before.

Of course, Bishop has always been a great visual narrator, even in his single shots, but here, I really think he took it one step further. It is like watching a movie, and it is frustrating that we never have gotten to see what he could have done next.
But then again, let us just enjoy the huge opus he has left us.
